Recall that full champion Dmitry Bivol was forced to relinquish the “WBC” title in order to fight a trilogy bout with Artur Beterbiev.
In turn, the promotion of Mauricio Sulaiman decided to leave the belt with Benavidez, who will defend it today against seasoned British boxer Anthony Yarde.
The Arizona native held the world championship belt under the prestigious “WBC” banner at super middleweight (up to 76.2 kg). He had no serious competition there and quite reasonably decided to move up a weight class (up to 79.4 kg).
Saul Alvarez is one notable name, moving from one division to another. However, a possible meeting between “Canelo” and David is still being discussed, and who knows whether they will meet in the ring or not?! It would be a very intriguing spectacle, especially for Mexican boxing fans.
At light heavyweight, “The Monster” has had two not entirely convincing bouts against Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk (former world champion) and Cuban David Morrell; in his fight with the latter, he even went down in a knockdown. It happened in the 11th round.
As for his current opponent, Yarde is a top boxer. In January 2023, he unsuccessfully challenged for the “WBC,” “IBF” and “WBO” titles against Artur Beterbiev.
He had his most recent fight in April this year, when he won the “trilogy” against Lyndon Arthur.
Benavidez is the clear favorite in this matchup. Most experts expect an early victory for the American of Mexican descent.
