In the women’s division (up to 63 kg), the headliner is North Korean weightlifter and reigning world champion with a world record in the (up to 64 kg) category—Ri Suk.
Her main challenger will likely be Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion from Canada Maude Charron. Unfortunately, we will not see Paris 2024 Olympic champion, China’s Luo Shifang, on the platform. Shifang won Olympic gold in the (up to 59 kg) category.
Filipina Elreen Ann Ando and Turkey’s Aysel Özkan will try to join the fight for the medals.
In the men’s (up to 71 kg) category, the competition promises to be even more exciting and competitive. We will see reigning world champion in the (up to 67 kg) category, North Korean Ri Won Ju and top prospect from Thailand Weeraphon Wichuma at the barbell. Despite being only 21 years old, Weeraphon is the 2023 world champion and a silver medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
It will be interesting to watch ambitious European competitors, Turkey’s Yusuf Genç and Armenia’s Gor Saakyan. Yusuf is the newly crowned European champion. Gor settled for silver at the April championships in Chișinău.
